#MADRADROLLCALL 02: An Interview with Laney Schwartz of Life is But a Dish
In 2017, I was picked to attend the first ever Hedley & Bennet “School if Hustle”. Not only was it a full day of meeting some of the most bad ass entrepreneurs of today but it’s where I met my friend and client, Laney from Life is But a Dish. We instantly recognized each other from our Instagram profiles - I know, kind of crazy but it’s the world we’re living in. We stuck together that day and learned so much about each other. I had just officially gone out on my own launching Mad Rad Media. We worked out the details of our new partnership over a couple of months and took the plunge to work together. Bringing Laney on as my first content creator client was the best decision I made in those early days.
How did you get your start with LIBAD? What did you do before?
I used to be an elementary school teacher! I taught 1st grade for 6 years. I have always loved cooking and while I was teaching I was already taking photos of my food, just for fun, and posting it on facebook. About 7 months after I had my first daughter i discovered the world of food blogging. I couldn't believe that it was possible to have that as your job! After my 2nd baby I stopped teaching, started Life is but a Dish and the rest is history!
Not cooking related but you have some pretty rad dance moves, do you have a favorite song or artist?
When it comes to dancing I love anything 90's hip hop. When it comes to singing, gimme all the Broadway Shows. And if I just wanna listen to music and chill out, Dave Matthews all day.
Favorite food to cook? Favorite food to eat but not cook?
Favorite food to cook is anything dinner related. Probably pasta. Favorite food to eat? That's like asking me to choose a favorite child! I simply cannot choose. But I love some good quality healthy comfort food. Amazing salads, pastas, and veggies.
What would you be doing right now if you weren’t here?
Honestly, I can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing. I feel I'm right where I want and need to be.
What was the tipping point for your business?
2018, when I went full force diving into brand partnerships. This is when I started working with Mad Rad Media and we over doubled, even tripled my income from the previous year. I quickly realized my worth and knew I was onto something. Instagram has also been a huge game changer for me. The relationship I have with my audience is unique, fun and extremely meaningful to me. Sharing recipes, making people laugh and realizing that I actually make a difference in people's lives is so encouraging and keeps me going every day.
“Once I began working with Hannah and Mad Rad my business completely changed! It was just the push I needed to connect with quality brands and I truly felt like Hannah was an extension of my right arm. She is extremely hard working, loyal and determined to help me grow my business. I trust her whole heartedly and have been extremely impressed and excited about our collaboration. It's a pleasure to work with someone who genuinely cares and understands the business.” - Laney Schwartz
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Interacting with my audience and creating approachable recipes that make people feel confident in the kitchen even when they're not.
What entrepreneurial hacks have you developed to stay focused and productive in your day-to-day?
I'm still trying to find those hacks! As I've grown and my business goals have changed, hiring help has been really important so that I'm able to focus on more of the creative, rather than the day to day.
If you could offer a first-time influencer/blogger/content creator only one piece of advice, what would it be?
Find YOUR passion and share it. If you are passionate about what you do, the right people will follow. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, just put your own spin on it. And your own spin on it is YOU!
